What is RoboCup and what is its goal?

RoboCup is an annual world championship for robot football carrying a deliberately audacious target: to field a team of fully autonomous humanoid robots capable of beating the reigning human World Cup champions by 2050. It is a research platform rather than entertainment. Football was chosen because it combines visual perception, split-second decision-making, team coordination and motion control at once — the same problems robots face in industrial and rescue work.
