Hiring Technical Leadership

Should I hire technical leadership or contract a development agency? — answered by Engineer Saeed Baatiah

They solve two different problems, and conflating them is common and expensive. A development agency executes what you decided; technical leadership decides what should be executed and oversees whoever executes it. The risk in contracting an agency with nobody representing you technically is that you buy, evaluate and accept delivery with no ability to judge — so the quality of what you receive rests entirely on the vendor’s honesty.

The risk worth stating plainly: when you contract a development firm with nobody representing you technically, you are buying from a party that estimates the cost, defines the scope, assesses the quality of its own work and decides when it is finished — all on its own. This does not imply vendors are dishonest; it means any arrangement placing every decision with one party goes badly even for an honest one when a disagreement arises.

And the answer is not necessarily hiring technical leadership but having an independent opinion at just three points: before signing (reviewing scope, price, terms and code ownership), mid-build (does what is being built match what was agreed?), and at delivery (did you receive what you paid for?). Three short reviews are far cheaper than a project delivered incomplete and discovered months later.

And one clause alone justifies an independent review: ownership of the code and accounts. Many contracts grant you a “right to use” rather than ownership, so when you want to change vendor you discover you do not own what you paid for. Read that clause specifically before signing, and require explicit wording transferring full ownership.

  • The agency executes what you decided; leadership decides what to execute
  • An independent opinion at three points: before signing, mid-build, delivery
  • Read the ownership clause — many contracts grant “use”, not ownership
