A logistics and transport company — where do we start technically? — answered by Engineer Saeed Baatiah

Start from the most frequent pain point, usually one of three: tracking where a shipment is now, route planning and load allocation, and proof of delivery with its paperwork. The right order is usually: digital proof of delivery first, because it directly reduces disputes and collection delays; then shipment tracking, because it removes most “where is my shipment” calls; then route planning, the most complex and the highest-return later.

Why digital proof of delivery comes first even though tracking seems more important: because it touches cash directly. A lost paper document means an invoice that cannot be collected, a dispute with a customer saying “it never arrived”, and a collection delay stretching to weeks. A digital signature with a photo, location and timestamp settles the dispute in a second and attaches to the invoice automatically.

Then tracking, whose real benefit is operational rather than marketing: it removes most of the “where is my shipment” calls that consume a full-time person in many companies. And the useful minimum needs no vehicle trackers — a status update from the driver at each stage and a link the customer can see is enough. Trackers are a later step justified by fleet size.

And route planning last, because it is the most complex and its return appears at a certain scale: it needs accurate data on addresses, delivery windows and vehicle capacities for optimisation to produce a real result. Starting there before the data is clean produces an “optimised” route built on wrong addresses — worse than manual planning where the driver knows the area.

  • Proof of delivery first — it touches cash directly
  • Tracking removes most “where is my shipment” calls
  • Do not start route planning before the address data is clean
