Describe one process that repeats daily in your company, then ask them to describe it back in their own words. If they restate it accurately and add a question about an edge case you did not mention — what happens when an order is cancelled, or a payment is late — they understand it. A developer who jumps straight to technology without asking about exceptions will build a system that works only in the happy path and breaks on the first real case.
